The recent drop in water levels of the Yamuna River at Wazirabad has significantly affected the operations of two major water treatment plants operated by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), leading to water supply disruptions across various parts of New Delhi. The Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants, which together supply approximately 232 million gallons per day (MGD), are currently functioning below their optimal capacity due to reduced raw water availability. The Wazirabad barrage requires a minimum water level of 674.5 feet for normal operations. To mitigate the impact, DJB has rerouted water from the Haiderpur canal system. However, residents in central areas such as Patel Nagar and parts of Dwarka have reported ongoing shortages and low pressure, with some areas experiencing disruptions for up to 15 days. The Delhi government is exploring a water exchange project with Haryana to alleviate the situation. Currently, Delhi's average water production is between 900 and 1,000 MGD, while the demand peaks at around 1,260 MGD during the summer months, exacerbating the crisis.
