In a contentious Special General Meeting (SGM) held on Sunday in Kurla, Mumbai, Sayba Spaces was appointed as the builder for the redevelopment of the Bombay Taximen’s Colony, despite claims from residents that the meeting lacked a quorum. The SGM, attended by police and private security, lasted from 5 pm to 10 pm and saw significant opposition from residents who boycotted the proceedings, citing a lack of transparency and fairness in the selection process. Girish Mishra, a managing committee member, stated that for the resolution to pass, 487 of the 686 members needed to be present, but only about 300 residents attended due to the boycott. The colony, located near the Bandra-Kurla Complex, is a prime real estate area comprising 686 tenements and 30 commercial spaces. This is the fifth attempt at redevelopment in the last 21 years, with previous efforts in 2005, 2008, 2013, and 2018 failing for various reasons. Nitesh Singh, a partner at Sayba Spaces and a BJP corporator, defended the appointment, stating that his company met all tender conditions. However, residents raised concerns about the company's financial credentials and alleged favoritism in the selection process.
