In Fazilka district, Punjab, India, four individuals linked to a contractor for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been booked for allegedly encroaching on private land in Begganwali village. The incident surfaced during a demarcation exercise conducted by revenue authorities, which revealed that only 71 marlas of land had been legally acquired for the ongoing four-laning work on the Fazilka-Abohar stretch of National Highway 07, while an additional 41 marlas were illegally occupied. The police registered a case at Khui Khera police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of cheating and criminal trespass, based on a complaint from local resident Arpit Gupta. Gupta alleged that members of the contractor's team entered his family's land without permission and used heavy machinery for construction activities linked to a proposed toll plaza. Ferozepur MP Sher Singh Ghubaya criticized the encroachment and highlighted that the toll plaza's location, just 4.5 km from city limits, violates the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways regulations, which require a distance of at least 5 km from municipal boundaries. This situation raises concerns about its potential impact on local development and traffic movement.
