India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026, which will take effect on May 1, 2026. These new regulations, established under the PROG Act of 2025, aim to create a balanced regulatory framework that prohibits real-money gaming (RMG) while allowing for the growth of e-sports and casual gaming. The Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) will be responsible for classifying games, enforcing compliance, and implementing user protection measures such as age verification and addiction controls. The rules adopt a minimal-intervention approach, exempting most non-gambling games from mandatory approvals, although e-sports organizers must register within specified timelines. Violations of these regulations can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment of up to 3 years and fines reaching βΉ3 crore (approximately $360,000 USD). A structured grievance redressal process will also be in place to ensure user complaints are addressed promptly, with resolutions aimed to be completed within 30 days.
