A significant fire broke out in the slums of Sector 12, Vikas Nagar, Lucknow, on Wednesday evening, destroying numerous shanties and leaving nearly 1,000 people homeless. Relief efforts are being spearheaded by the Commbiio Foundation, with founding members Arun Saraswat and Sunita Paul actively involved. They began distributing dry food, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and water the following afternoon, as high temperatures complicated relief efforts. Sunita highlighted a critical issue: the lack of safe and private sanitation facilities for women and adolescent girls in the aftermath of the fire. With over 400 women affected, including 120 currently menstruating, the absence of basic necessities like sanitary pads and undergarments poses significant challenges. The team is distributing sanitary products but emphasizes the urgent need for private spaces for hygiene management. The situation is further exacerbated by hazardous debris from the fire, making it difficult for residents to find safe areas to sit or sleep. Immediate solutions, such as portable toilets, are being called for to address these pressing needs.
