The 64-foot Monumento De Messi in Lake Town, Kolkata, is facing removal due to safety concerns after a police complaint was lodged regarding its stability during strong winds. The statue, which was inaugurated by Lionel Messi on December 13, 2022, is constructed from fibreglass supported by an iron framework on a 20-foot concrete base. Residents reported that the statue sways, raising fears of potential toppling. Public Works Department (PWD) officials have pointed out engineering issues and questioned the permissions for its installation, suggesting that it was built without the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC). The statue was created by a team of local artisans in 40 days, but its sculptor, Monty Paul, defended its design, stating it was intended to sway to withstand winds and earthquakes. The decision to remove the statue comes shortly after the demolition of another iconic statue, the Football Man, in Salt Lake.
