On Friday, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP from Rae Bareli, related to allegations of his British citizenship. The order was issued during the hearing of a petition by S Vignesh Shishir, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker from Karnataka, who claimed that Gandhi had declared himself a British citizen in a company named 'Backops Limited' in the UK. The court's decision came after it reviewed documents presented by the petitioner, which raised questions about Gandhi's Indian citizenship. The state government counsel, VK Singh, indicated that cognizable offences were established against Gandhi, and the state would investigate the matter, potentially involving central agencies. This ruling overturned a previous order from a Special MP-MLA court in Lucknow, which had rejected the FIR request citing lack of jurisdiction. Congress leaders, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi, dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, asserting that they would not hold up under legal scrutiny.
