The Labour Party (LP) in Benue state has made history by nominating Juliana Obetta, a former Okpokwu local government chairman, as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 elections. This nomination is significant as it marks the first time a woman has been nominated for such a position by any political party in the state. The announcement was made during a gathering in Makurdi, where LP governorship candidate Dr Matthias Byuan presented Obetta, highlighting the party's commitment to gender inclusion and equity. Byuan stated that the decision aims to enhance women's representation in governance, a sentiment echoed by Obetta, who dedicated her nomination to the women of Benue and pledged to advocate for greater female participation in politics. She emphasized the importance of women's voices in government and committed to working towards achieving the 35% affirmative action target for women in public offices. The LP leaders expressed confidence in their candidates, asserting that they are well-positioned to compete effectively in the upcoming elections.
