On May 9, 2026, the Indian government announced the full operationalization of four significant labour codes: the Code on Wages, 2019; the Industrial Relations Code, 2020; the Code on Social Security, 2020; and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020. These codes, which came into effect on November 21, 2025, consolidate 29 existing labour laws into a more efficient and modern framework. The newly published rules aim to ensure minimum wage and universal social security for all workers, addressing long-standing challenges in the labour market. Key provisions include a mandatory appointment letter, free health check-ups for workers aged 40 and above, and equal pay for women in different shifts. Additionally, the rules cap weekly working hours at 48 hours, mandate at least one weekend off, and require overtime pay for extra hours worked. The establishment of a National Reskilling Fund will assist workers who lose their jobs, promoting a supportive labour ecosystem. The implementation of these codes is expected to enhance worker protections and ease business operations across India.
