Karnataka Assembly Speaker UT Khader announced that he will make a decision on the disqualification of Dharwad MLA Vinay Kulkarni only after his office receives official communication regarding the life sentence handed to him. Kulkarni was sentenced to life imprisonment on April 15 by a special court in Bengaluru for his role in the 2016 murder of BJP leader Yogesh Goudar. Khader indicated that if Kulkarni appeals the conviction, he may remain in office while the appeal is pending. Under the Representation of the People Act, a legislator sentenced to imprisonment for six months or more is disqualified, but a three-month grace period allows for appeals. The court's judgment included strong criticism of the role of legislators and the conduct of police officers who provided false testimony. The court has ordered perjury cases against these officers and others who changed their statements during the trial.
