In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, the transport department has launched a significant crackdown on vehicles equipped with modified silencers, hooters, and multi-toned horns, following directives from the Allahabad High Court. This initiative aims to address the growing concern over noise pollution. In just two days since the enforcement began on Friday, authorities have challaned 33 vehicles and seized 9. The operation is a response to a public interest litigation highlighting the adverse effects of noise pollution on residents. Most of the penalized vehicles are Bullet motorcycles known for their high-decibel noise due to illegal modifications. The transport department plans to continue enforcement actions and has issued notices to around 20 spare parts shop owners in Lalbagh, urging them to comply with the Motor Vehicles Act. Under this act, selling or installing such modifications can lead to penalties including fines of up to ₹1 lakh (approximately $1,200 USD) or imprisonment for up to one year. Vehicle owners using modified parts face fines of ₹5,000 (approximately $60 USD) for the modifications and an additional ₹10,000 (approximately $120 USD) for causing noise pollution. The department is also preparing to launch a public awareness campaign to educate vehicle owners and vendors about the legal implications of such modifications.
