On Saturday, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) proposed that the environmental management plan (EMP) established for AIIMS in Delhi be replicated across all government hospitals in India. This recommendation emerged during a hearing focused on air pollution concerns surrounding the AIIMS campus. The NGT had previously established a joint committee, including representatives from various ministries and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), to evaluate pollution sources and create a comprehensive environmental management framework for government hospitals. In its order from July 3, 2023, the NGT instructed the committee to engage with stakeholders and gather relevant data. Although the health ministry reported that an EMP had been developed and made available online, the NGT highlighted that this document was specifically tailored to AIIMS Delhi. As a result, the tribunal suggested that the health ministry explore the feasibility of adapting the AIIMS plan for other government hospitals, ensuring it is modified appropriately to suit different contexts.
