Pawan Khera, a leader of the Indian National Congress party, has filed for anticipatory bail in the Gauhati High Court concerning a defamation case initiated by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam. The FIR against Khera was lodged after he alleged that Riniki possessed passports from the UAE and Egypt, as well as undisclosed luxury properties in Dubai and a company in the United States. Both Himanta and Riniki have denied these allegations. The case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of cheating and defamation. Following a police search of Khera's residence in Delhi, he was granted anticipatory bail by the Telangana High Court, but this was later challenged by Assam police in the Supreme Court, which stayed the bail. A subsequent plea for transit bail was also denied. On Saturday, Assam police sought a non-bailable warrant against Khera, but the chief judicial magistrate's court in Kamrup Metropolitan district rejected this request, citing a lack of supporting evidence. Khera's legal team has filed a petition in the Gauhati High Court, which is scheduled for hearing on Tuesday.
