The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has levied a ₹7 crore fine on the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (MC) due to its failure to manage sewage effectively. This decision was made during a review meeting led by Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, who expressed concern over the discharge of untreated wastewater into the Kala Sanghian Drain, Jamsher Drain, and Chitti Bein. Despite the government investing ₹34 crore to improve the Kala Sanghian Drain, it continues to suffer from pollution and sludge accumulation. Seechewal emphasized the need for accountability among officials responsible for the negligence that led to this situation. Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia assured that the district administration would take rigorous measures to ensure the drains are pollution-free and warned that any laxity in addressing the issue would not be tolerated.
