Water supply to the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, which includes areas from Mulund to Mankhurd, is slated to be fully restored by Thursday morning, according to a civic official. The disruption was caused by a four-hour electricity outage affecting the Pise and Panjrapur water treatment plants from 8:20 PM on Tuesday to 12:50 AM on Wednesday. This incident was described as 'very rare,' as such a prolonged disconnection had never occurred before. The outage impacted the operation of approximately 18 water pumps, leading to a significant reduction in water supply. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) typically supplies about 2,020 million litres of water per day (MLD) to these regions, but during the outage, only 1,450 MLD was delivered, resulting in low water pressure and inadequate supply. The BMC emphasized that heavy water pumps require a high load of power, which generators cannot provide, making them reliant on the Maharashtra State Electricity Board for electricity. Both water treatment plants failed simultaneously, causing the complete disruption of water supply.
