Adarsh Prashant Mhatre, a 34-year-old resident of Alibaug in Raigad district, Maharashtra, was arrested on April 15 for allegedly defrauding a Pune-based HR manager of ₹26.5 lakh ($32,000 USD) through a fraudulent profile on a matrimonial website. Mhatre, a known offender, posed as an Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist and used multiple aliases, including 'Swapnil Varule' and 'Hemant Gaykar', to deceive women into marriage proposals. He gained the victim's trust by promising to invest in her daughter's future through a real estate venture. Following the victim's complaint, police registered a case on January 10, 2026, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act. Mhatre reportedly used the fraudulently obtained money to gamble at a casino, from which police managed to recover ₹21 lakh ($25,000 USD). The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into other similar cases linked to Mhatre.
