Deutsche Lufthansa AG has announced the cancellation of 20,000 uneconomic short-haul flights from its European summer schedule in response to soaring jet fuel prices, which have doubled since the start of the Iran war. This decision will result in a reduction of 1% of available seat-kilometers and save around 40,000 tons of jet fuel. The airline has also grounded 27 older aircraft and shut down its Cityline regional unit as part of its cost-cutting measures. The initial wave of cancellations began on Tuesday and will continue until the end of May, with further reductions expected to be announced by late April or early May. Overall, the airline industry is facing significant challenges, with a projected decline in capacity of up to 3% in May, as many of the largest airlines have also cut flights. To improve profitability, Lufthansa is planning to reduce 4,000 administrative jobs by 2030 and transfer more short-haul flights to lower-cost units, where crew costs are significantly lower.
