California has become the first state in the U.S. to offer a month of free diapers to families with newborns, a program announced by Governor Gavin Newsom. Initially available at 65 to 75 hospitals serving low-income patients, the initiative will provide 400 diapers per family, which is approximately a month's supply, given that newborns typically require eight to ten diapers daily. The state allocated $7.4 million in last year's budget and plans to invest an additional $12.5 million in the upcoming fiscal year to expand the program. This effort aims to ease the financial burden of diaper costs, which average around $100 monthly per child, and to ensure that parents can focus on their newborns without the stress of affordability. The initiative is a partnership with the non-profit organization Baby2Baby, which has developed a manufacturing system to produce diapers at a significantly reduced cost. Newsom emphasized that every baby deserves a healthy start, aligning this program with previous state efforts to provide free meals in schools and free preschool education.
