Janai Safar, a 32-year-old woman, is set to appear in a Sydney court after being charged with being a member of the Islamic State. She arrived in Australia as part of a group of 13 women and children on separate flights from overseas. Upon landing, she was escorted off the plane by police and charged with entering or remaining in declared areas, as well as membership in a terrorist organization, both of which carry a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment. In addition to Safar, two other women, Kawsar Abbas (53) and her daughter Zeinab Ahmad (31), were arrested at Melbourne Airport by the Victorian joint counter-terrorism team. Abbas' other daughter, Zahra Ahmad (33), was not arrested or charged. The group included a total of eight children.
