In November 2018, Vijay, a prominent actor in Tamil Nadu, captivated audiences with his role in the film 'Sarkar,' where he portrayed Sundar Ramaswamy, an NRI businessman who fights against electoral fraud. Fast forward to February 2024, Vijay launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking his entry into politics without the backing of established parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) or the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Over two years, TVK focused on grassroots organizing across 234 constituencies and built a manifesto aimed at addressing the concerns of marginalized groups, including women and first-time voters. The culmination of this effort was evident in the May 2026 elections, where Tamil Nadu recorded its highest-ever voter turnout of 85.1%. TVK led in over 100 constituencies, significantly challenging the incumbent DMK, which had previously won 159 seats in 2021. The AIADMK, once a dominant force, struggled to maintain relevance.
