The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has decided to maintain existing electricity tariffs for the 2026-27 period, extending a streak of no hikes to seven years. This decision, which affects over 35 million consumers, is expected to be officially announced by the end of April and will take effect in May. Political analysts suggest that this move aligns with the ruling party's electoral strategy, particularly with assembly elections approaching in early 2027. The decision is justified on regulatory grounds, citing a substantial surplus of over ₹18,500 crore, which allows UPERC to avoid raising tariffs despite financial pressures in the power sector. However, the financial health of distribution companies remains a concern, with cumulative losses exceeding ₹1 lakh crore. Experts warn that while the current freeze provides immediate relief, underlying issues such as operational inefficiencies and dependency on subsidies must be addressed to ensure long-term stability in the sector.
