Eli Lilly has announced promising results from a Phase 3 trial of its next-generation obesity drug, retatrutide, which demonstrated a 60.6% reduction in the severity of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea among adults with obesity. The findings were presented at the American Diabetes Association conference in New Orleans. In addition to addressing sleep apnea, retatrutide also significantly alleviated knee osteoarthritis pain by up to 73.1%. The trial revealed that participants with obesity lost an average of 28% of their body weight, while adults with type 2 diabetes saw notable reductions in blood sugar levels. However, the study noted that 2% of patients taking the lowest dose of retatrutide experienced major adverse cardiovascular events, although these were not definitively linked to the drug. Retatrutide operates as a 'triple G' drug, targeting GLP-1 and GIP hormones, along with glucagon receptors. This positions Eli Lilly in competition with other pharmaceutical companies, such as Denmark's Novo Nordisk, in the rapidly expanding market for obesity and diabetes treatments.
