Indian Premier League (IPL) teams are appealing to the finance ministry to reclassify their matches as sporting events, which would lower the goods and services tax (GST) on match tickets from 40% to 18%. This request aims to align IPL ticket taxation with that of international matches organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Previously, IPL tickets were taxed at 28% before the GST overhaul in September 2022, which introduced a higher 40% rate for certain goods and services considered 'sin' items, such as gambling and luxury goods. The teams argue that categorizing IPL matches alongside casinos and betting is unjustified, as the tournament serves as healthy family entertainment enjoyed by a broad audience. Experts emphasize that the high tax rate negatively affects the sports ecosystem, which is essential for economic growth and the development of sports in India. They also note that IPL's potential for tourism and business generation for the travel and hospitality sectors is significant. The GST Council will ultimately decide on this matter.
