A fire broke out at Tata Steel's Port Talbot plant in the UK late Wednesday, leading to the safe evacuation of all personnel on site. The fire originated from one of the processing lines, and Tata Steel confirmed that it was not connected to the recent demolition of an empty gas holder that took place earlier that evening. The Mid and West Wales Fire Service responded promptly to the incident, and local emergency services collaborated to extinguish the fire completely. The Port Talbot facility, which has a production capacity of 3.2 million tonnes, is currently undergoing a significant transition to an electric arc furnace. This transformation involves an investment of £1.25 billion and is supported by the local government. The new electric arc furnace is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2027. Tata Steel has already completed major demolition work on the old blast furnaces and is in the process of fabricating and delivering the necessary equipment for the new facility.
