The Delhi government is set to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to monitor and manage air pollution in the city. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that the government will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the AIRAWAT Research Foundation, linked to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, by next week. This collaboration aims to establish a framework for deploying AI-based, sensor-enabled systems to enhance air quality management in Delhi. Sirsa emphasized the need for technology-backed solutions to combat air pollution, stating, "Our government is committed to using every credible scientific and technological tool available to protect the health of citizens." The MoU represents a knowledge partnership that does not require financial commitment from the environment department at this stage. The initiative is expected to provide insights into pollution patterns, identify localized pollution sources, and enable timely interventions through the integration of AI tools and analytics platforms. Sirsa highlighted that effective pollution response must be data-driven and supported by robust institutional coordination, noting that short-term measures alone cannot resolve Delhi's air quality challenges.
