Agnimitra Paul, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), entered the West Bengal Legislative Assembly after winning the Asansol South seat in the 2021 Assembly elections. She narrowly defeated Sayani Ghosh of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) by securing 67,852 votes against Ghosh's 66,725 votes, marking a significant political victory in a state dominated by the TMC. Before her political career, Paul was a successful fashion designer and entrepreneur, having graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology. She transitioned into politics in 2019, quickly rising through the ranks of the BJP and becoming the president of the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal in 2020, where she initiated women-focused programs such as self-defense workshops. Despite her success as an MLA, Paul faced electoral defeats in the 2022 and 2024 elections for the Lok Sabha. As West Bengal approaches the 2026 assembly elections, she is set to contest again from South Asansol, this time against TMC's Tapas Banerjee, amid heightened political competition in the region.
