During the second edition of the Save the Earth Conclave in New Delhi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stressed the necessity of creating job opportunities in rural and tribal areas to combat the migration of youth and farmers to metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Pune. He pointed out that the economic conditions in villages are dire, with many young people and farmers leaving their homes due to a lack of employment. Gadkari highlighted the alarming statistic of 10,000 farmer suicides in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, indicating the severity of the situation. He called for a transformational shift in the agriculture sector, urging farmers to transition from being 'annadata' (food producers) to 'urjaadata' (energy providers). Furthermore, he advocated for increasing the production of alternative fuels and biofuels to reduce India's reliance on fossil fuel imports, which amount to ₹22 lakh crore (approximately $2.65 trillion USD) and contribute to pollution. Gadkari also mentioned that bamboo plantation could potentially create 5 crore jobs (50 million) in India, emphasizing the importance of sustainable agricultural practices.
