In response to the ongoing conflict with Iran, the Pentagon is fast-tracking the procurement of over 10,000 low-cost cruise missiles through the Low-Cost Containerized Munitions (LCCM) program. The Department of Defense has reached agreements with companies including Anduril, CoAspire, and Leidos to develop these missiles, which are designed to be produced quickly and affordably. The new missiles are expected to cost only a few hundred thousand dollars each, a stark contrast to the $2 million price tag of traditional missiles like Tomahawks. The Pentagon's strategy reflects a shift towards incorporating non-traditional defense contractors to expand its arsenal and ensure rapid production capabilities. Additionally, the Pentagon is exploring lower-cost hypersonic weapons with Castelion, aiming for a production capacity of 500 Blackbeard missiles annually.
