AS Arthur, a former minister in Manipur, passed away early Saturday morning at the age of 99 in New Delhi due to a prolonged illness. Arthur was first elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from the Ukhrul Assembly Constituency in 1984 as an Independent candidate. He later joined the Indian National Congress and served as the minister for forest and environment and general administration during the chief ministership of Rishang Keishing in 1995. Arthur is survived by three sons and four daughters, including his son Alfred Kanngam Arthur, who is currently a Lok Sabha MP representing Manipur. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed his condolences on social media, highlighting Arthur's dedication to public service. The Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, also paid tribute to Arthur, acknowledging his integrity and commitment to the welfare of the people. Arthur's last rites are scheduled for Monday in his native Shangshak Phunghon village in Ukhrul district, Manipur. In a related note, Khatingla Keishing, the wife of former Chief Minister Rishang Keishing, also passed away on the same day at the age of 96.
