AstraZeneca's investigational GLP-1 pill, elecoglipron, has shown promising results in mid-stage trials for obesity and diabetes. In the VISTA trial, participants taking the highest dose of elecoglipron lost 11.2% of their weight after 36 weeks. This trial included all patients, regardless of whether they discontinued the treatment. In comparison, Eli Lilly’s Foundayo pill achieved the same weight loss percentage in a Phase 3 study that lasted twice as long, making direct comparisons challenging. In a separate trial called SOLSTICE, which focused on diabetes, patients on the highest dose of elecoglipron experienced a 1.74 percentage-point reduction in A1C levels after 26 weeks. This was compared with a group taking oral Ozempic, which saw a smaller decrease of 1.32 percentage points. The findings were shared at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association and published in the Lancet, highlighting the potential of elecoglipron in managing obesity and diabetes, although further studies are needed to assess its effectiveness against existing treatments.
