The Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has initiated the bidding process for the Fotu La Tunnel, which is part of a significant effort to enhance connectivity in Ladakh. This project follows the upcoming breakthrough ceremony for the Zojila Tunnel, together forming an all-weather corridor on National Highway-1. The Fotu La Tunnel, estimated to cost ₹824.12 crore, involves constructing twin tunnels nearly two kilometers long, with a total project length of 2.65 kilometers, and is expected to be completed within three years. Located at 4,108 meters, Fotu La Pass is the highest point on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway, notorious for severe weather disruptions. The new tunnel aims to alleviate these issues by allowing traffic to bypass the treacherous mountain pass, thus improving travel efficiency and reliability. This corridor is crucial not only for civilian transport but also for military logistics, especially in light of the ongoing strategic importance of the region following tensions with China. The government's long-term goal is to create a dependable year-round transportation network to support both economic development and military needs.
