Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) is undertaking a significant transition to replace over 30,000 legacy Windows PCs and Chromebooks with the entry-level MacBook Neo for students in Grade 8 and above. Younger students will continue using the existing fleet of iPads and MacBook Airs. KCPS has already acquired more than 4,500 MacBook Neo units to support high school students as part of this initiative. Scott Jones, the chief technology officer at KCPS, emphasizes that this migration represents a long-term investment in technology that is safer, more durable, and stable, ultimately enhancing the classroom learning experience. The decision has garnered attention after Apple highlighted the KCPS contract during its Q2 2026 earnings call, indicating robust growth in its Mac lineup within the educational sector. Analysts interpret this shift as a direct challenge to the traditional dominance of Windows PCs and Chromebooks in schools. Additionally, there are concerns regarding supply chain pressures, with reports suggesting that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co may need to increase production of the A18 Pro chips used in the devices.
