On Wednesday afternoon, a tragic lightning strike in the Golokganj area of Dhubri district, Assam, resulted in the death of Gopal Barman (32) from the Balabari area. Additionally, three students from Lakhimari High School suffered severe injuries and were taken to Dhubri Medical College and Hospital, where they are reported to be in critical condition. The incident occurred during a powerful pre-monsoon storm that brought torrential rain and caused widespread destruction across several border villages. According to Harshajit Das, officer-in-charge of Golokganj Police Station, numerous villages along the border, including Lakhimari, Uttar Raipur, Bishkhowa, Kedar, and Kanuri, were severely affected. The storm lasted approximately ten minutes, during which roofs were torn off houses, trees were uprooted, and electric poles were knocked down. In a related incident, seven cattle were killed when lightning struck Lalkura village under Gauripur Police Station. The community is now grappling with the aftermath of this devastating weather event.
