The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has officially designated Ken Nala in the Gulra area of Shravasti as a biodiversity heritage site. This initiative, announced by Shravasti District Magistrate Annapurna Garg, aims to enhance environmental conservation and promote ecotourism in the region. Ken Nala is recognized for its unique freshwater ecosystem, particularly the rare freshwater mangrove species Barringtonia acutangula, locally known as ‘Injad’. The site encompasses 80 hectares of the Bhinga reserved forest, which totals 452.88 hectares, and is sustained by multiple water channels from surrounding areas. This area supports a rich variety of terrestrial and aquatic species, making it vital for ecological balance. Although not currently part of the protected area network under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, Ken Nala plays an essential role in conservation efforts and serves as a seasonal habitat for migratory birds. The nearby Suhelwa wildlife sanctuary, established in 1988, further underscores the region's ecological significance, housing diverse flora and fauna.
