The Punjab cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has approved the creation of a Directorate of Forensic Science Services to streamline and expedite crime investigations across the state. This directorate will replace the previously known forensic science laboratory and will operate under the Department of Home Affairs. The new structure will include regional forensic science laboratories in Amritsar, Bathinda, and Ludhiana, with enhanced capabilities in areas such as DNA analysis, ballistics, and cyber forensics. Additionally, 28 mobile forensic units will be established, ensuring that each police district has access to forensic expertise on-site. Staffing will be bolstered with the creation of 266 new technical positions, alongside the revival of roles at the Mohali laboratory. In a separate initiative, the cabinet also approved the Farm Stay Policy-2026, aimed at boosting farmer incomes through rural tourism by allowing farmers to offer authentic experiences and accommodations on their land.
