India's unemployment rate reached a six-month high of 5.2% in April, up from 5.1% in March, primarily due to a rise in rural unemployment. The rural jobless rate increased to 4.6%, while urban unemployment eased to 6.6%, marking a low point for the past year. Notably, urban female unemployment fell to 8.5%, reflecting improvements in job availability for women. Conversely, youth unemployment saw a slight uptick, with the overall rate for young individuals aged 15-29 rising to 15.3%. The labour force participation rate (LFPR) remained stable but dipped to 55%, the lowest in eight months, indicating a decrease in both male and female participation. The worker population ratio (WPR) also declined to 52.2%, highlighting ongoing challenges in the job market.
