We’ve been hyper-focused in recent years on inflation – with good reason – amid the seemingly inexorable rise in the price of everything. Then we started noticing “shrinkflation”. The block of chocolate got smaller; there were fewer bikkies in the packet, but the price stayed the same. Possibly not bad for our waistlines, but inflation in disguise nonetheless. But now I think there’s another form of inflation by stealth emerging – one the Consumer Price Index doesn’t really capture. The internet, in its usual elegant way, has given it a name: “ensh**tification”.
