The export of Bengal's renowned Himsagar mangoes is facing uncertainty due to dark spots caused by a weather-induced disease. Continuous rain during the bagging process, followed by high temperatures, has led to these spots, which are early signs of infection. A major exporter from Malda reported that many fruits have become unsuitable for export, forcing the cancellation of a planned one-tonne shipment to the US. Despite this setback, the Malda Mango Merchants Association noted that while around 15% of bagged mangoes are affected, there are still nearly 300,000 unaffected fruits available for export. The overall export target for this season is between 300 and 500 metric tonnes, a significant increase from last year's total of 15 metric tonnes. The state horticulture department and exporters are promoting export-oriented cultivation practices to enhance fruit quality and meet international standards. Although the dark spot issue poses challenges, demand for premium Malda mangoes remains strong.
