In 2025, total visits from India to the United States decreased by nearly six percent, reaching 20.60 lakh compared to 21.90 lakh in 2024. This decline was primarily driven by a significant 30% drop in student travel, which fell to 2.16 lakh, marking the lowest level since 2021. The International Trade Administration (ITA) reported that student visits had peaked at 3.13 lakh in 2023 before this downturn. The decline began in the first quarter of 2025 and worsened over the following months, with only 74,091 students visiting in the first quarter of 2026, down from over one lakh in the same period in previous years. The decrease in student travel was attributed to expanded visa screening measures by the US Department of State, which raised concerns among Indian students regarding visa appointments. Conversely, business travel from India to the US rose to 4.65 lakh in 2025, up from 4.41 lakh in 2024, indicating a recovery in this sector following the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, tourism visits fell to 13.78 lakh in 2025, continuing to account for the largest share of Indian travel to the US. Despite the overall decline, India's rank among visit-generating countries improved to fourth in 2025, reflecting a gradual recovery in travel patterns.
