In a significant move towards modernizing civic administration, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched the 'Vision AI Vault' project to digitize historical civic records in E ward, Mumbai. Spearheaded by Ashwini Joshi, the additional municipal commissioner, this initiative aims to create a digital archive of old documents such as birth and death records and marriage certificates. The project comes in response to the deteriorating condition of these records, which have been preserved for decades but are now fading and fragile due to Mumbai's humid climate. Unlike conventional scanning methods, the AI-based platform can accurately read handwritten records in multiple languages and restore faded text, making the retrieval process much faster and more efficient. Once a name is entered into the system, the relevant record can be displayed instantly, along with a digitally signed certificate. This innovative approach not only simplifies administrative tasks but also aims to curb fraudulent documentation practices. The pilot project is guided by deputy commissioner Chanda Jadhav and E ward assistant commissioner Anand Kankal.
