The ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz poses a severe threat to global food security, according to Jorge Moreira da Silva, executive director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS). He stated that if fertilisers are not allowed through soon, 45 million more people could face hunger and starvation, particularly in Africa and Asia. The strait, through which a third of the world's fertilisers typically pass, has been effectively closed for months due to tensions related to the Iran war, which began with the US and Israel's military actions on February 28. The blockade also significantly impacts oil exports, with Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser noting that the market is losing around 100 million barrels of oil weekly. If the situation continues, the oil market may not return to normal until 2027. Efforts are underway to convince involved parties to allow passage for essential shipments. Meanwhile, Lithuania is preparing to send up to 40 soldiers to assist US operations in the Strait of Hormuz as tensions escalate.
