Denalai Tea Estate House, located in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, India, has transformed from a humble home for an abandoned elderly couple into a thriving shelter for over 50 senior citizens. Founded nearly 20 years ago by Mr. and Mrs. N. Ramamurthi, the initiative began when Ramamurthi, then working in the leprosy management division of the Tamil Nadu Health Department, took in a couple affected by leprosy who had been deserted by their families. Despite initial reservations, Mrs. Ramamurthi joined her husband in providing shelter to these vulnerable individuals. The couple utilized their earnings to establish a permanent home on their tea estate, officially forming the MN Trust in 2005. Today, the shelter offers free food, clothing, medical care, and emotional support, with separate facilities for male and female residents. A structured schedule ensures that meals and medical care are provided regularly. The shelter also emphasizes social engagement, allowing residents to participate in community activities, thereby combating loneliness. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Denalai maintained operations and implemented safety measures, solidifying its reputation as one of the best community care projects in the Nilgiris district.
