On Saturday, the Bombay High Court in Mumbai dismissed a petition from the Dharavi Koli Jamat Trust, which sought the exclusion of 200,830 sq m of land in Dharavi Koliwada from the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP). The court, comprising Justices Makarand Karnik and SM Modak, ruled that it was too late to intervene as the redevelopment process has been underway since a notification was issued in March 2016. The trust argued that the land, part of one of Mumbai's original fishing villages, should be excluded due to its cultural significance and the presence of common spaces used by the fishing community. However, the court noted that the land has lost its original character and has been subject to encroachments. It emphasized that multiple stakeholders have already accepted the redevelopment proposal, making any late intervention unwarranted. While the court allowed the trust to make a representation regarding the boundaries of Dharavi Koliwada, it stated that such a survey would have little consequence given the finality of the 2016 notification.

The court's decision allows the Dharavi redevelopment project to continue, which may lead to the displacement of the fishing community and the loss of cultural spaces.
