On April 23, 2023, the Indian government issued a travel advisory urging its nationals not to travel to Iran by air or land due to ongoing regional tensions and uncertainties affecting flight operations. The Indian Embassy in Tehran highlighted that airspace restrictions continue to impact international flights. In light of reports indicating the resumption of some flights between India and Iran, the embassy strongly recommended that Indian citizens refrain from travel. It also advised those currently in Iran to exit the country using designated land border routes, coordinating with the embassy for assistance. The advisory comes as approximately 9,000 Indians, including students, were reported to be in Iran when the conflict escalated on February 28, 2023, with around 1,800 having returned to India so far. The conflict began following a joint attack by the US and Israel, which resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several commanders, leading to widespread retaliatory actions by Iran across the Gulf region.
