The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a three-month deadline for operators of pay-and-use public toilets in Mumbai to upgrade their facilities. This decision follows a review meeting led by BMC leader of the house Ganesh Khankar, where officials assessed the state of public toilets operated by private agencies and NGOs. Inspections revealed serious deficiencies in cleanliness, maintenance, and basic amenities. Operators are required to replace damaged commodes and fittings, repair broken doors and windows, and enhance the overall upkeep of the facilities. Additionally, BMC has mandated the implementation of a citizen feedback system, hourly cleaning logs, and weekly deep-cleaning drives. An IoT-based odour monitoring system named “Gandhavedh” will also be installed to manage foul smells. Assistant commissioners have been tasked with monitoring compliance, and operators who fail to meet these standards within the specified timeframe risk having their contracts suspended or terminated, with alternative operators appointed if necessary.
