Reports indicate that the United States has paused arms sales to Taiwan, a decision that has sparked concern among American and Taiwanese lawmakers regarding the US's commitment to the island. This pause is attributed to the need to conserve military supplies for US operations in Iran and pressure from China. Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao confirmed the halt during a Senate committee meeting, noting that military sales would resume when deemed necessary. Although a $14 billion arms package for Taiwan was approved by US legislators in January, it has not yet received final approval from the White House. During a recent summit, President Trump discussed Taiwan arms sales with Chinese President Xi Jinping, dismissing a long-standing US policy of not consulting China on such matters. As a result, the US is facing challenges in moving forward with arms sales to Taiwan amid a backlog of $29.7 billion in military deliveries and a depleted inventory of advanced missile systems.
