On Monday, police in Surat rescued 37 child labourers, including 15 girls, aged between 12 and 14 years, from various textile units. The operation was conducted by the Surat district task force, which included officials from the Child Labour Department, Factory Department, and police. Raids were executed in 17 textile units in the Varachha area, where the children were allegedly forced to work in cutting and folding fabrics. The children were brought to Surat from Rajasthan about five months ago. Following their rescue, the boys were placed in V R Popawala's Children Home, while the girls were sent to a Girls' Home in Ramanagar. Surat Assistant Labour Commissioner Haresh Gamit stated that the unit owners rented floors to operate their businesses and employed children through agents. Authorities are now gathering information on these owners and will file charges against them. This rescue follows a previous operation where 91 child labourers were saved from similar conditions last month.
