In Maharashtra, India, about 25% of the 33,029 ongoing housing projects have been issued show cause notices by the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) for not complying with the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016. Specifically, 8,212 projects failed to provide required updates by the April 20 deadline, including details on registered flats, funds received, and construction plan amendments. The highest number of violations occurred in Pune district, with 1,957 projects defaulting, while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region had 4,644 non-compliant projects. Developers have been given 60 days to respond to these notices, and failure to comply could lead to severe actions such as project registration cancellation or freezing of bank accounts associated with the projects. MahaRERA chairman Manoj Saunik stressed the importance of transparency for homebuyers, stating that the authority will take strict measures against developers who do not adhere to reporting requirements.
