World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, aims to raise awareness about environmental issues, with this year's theme being “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” A collection of twelve impactful photos reveals the pervasive nature of plastic pollution, which has infiltrated every corner of the Earth. Each image highlights a different aspect of this crisis: from millions of tonnes of plastic entering oceans, threatening marine life, to remote beaches and mountain trails littered with waste. Sea turtles are often injured after mistaking plastic for food, while rivers transport debris from inland areas to the sea. The problem extends to urban environments, where improper waste disposal leaves streets littered with plastic. Additionally, microplastics have been found in various water sources, raising concerns about human health. Discarded fishing nets also continue to entrap marine animals, exacerbating the crisis. As plastic consumption grows, landfills overflow, and the open burning of plastic releases harmful pollutants. These images serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collective action to combat plastic pollution.
