The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections witnessed a remarkable event dubbed the 'Miracle of Tirupattur,' where Thalapathy Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate Seenivasa Sethupathy defeated the incumbent DMK Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan by a mere one vote. The final tally revealed Sethupathy received 83,365 votes while Periyakaruppan garnered 83,364 votes. This narrow victory underscores the significance of every vote in a democratic process. A key figure in this victory was Manikandan Sivanantham, a non-resident Indian (NRI) based in Oman, who made a 3,000 km journey to vote for TVK, showcasing the power of individual commitment to democracy. Following this election, TVK emerged as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu assembly, winning 108 seats and securing over 34% of the vote share, the highest for a political party formed since 2000. The ruling DMK alliance faced a significant setback, dropping to just 59 seats, while the AIADMK trailed with 47 seats. To form a government, Vijay will need to collaborate with smaller parties such as Congress and others, which hold a combined total of 13 seats.
